The Cypress-Fairbanks area of Houston is among the many growing communities of
Houston. Nestled in the Northwest quadrant of Houston, the population has increased
over 50% to nearly three-quarters of a million people since 2000. To put that in
perspective, if the Cy-Fair area were a city, it would be in the top 20 largest cities in the
United States. Making it even more unique is that the fire department, Cy-Fair VFD, is
the largest volunteer department in the United States. The department is comprised of
600 firefighters and emergency medical personnel with 50% being volunteers.
It was our honor to be able to meet with the chief, Chief Amy Ramon, and
representatives of her department in the very newly opened Station 9 in February 2019.
We were able to share a few words and then provide copies of Strength For Service to
God and Community to each member of the department. Chief Ramon was so
appreciative of not only the visit but spoke of what she thought these books will mean to
her fellow members. Knowing the difficulties they often face and their need for
reassurance and comfort these books will serve them well. Several of the members of
the department shared thoughts not only of thanks but for recognition of their efforts.
